Which Jobs Would You Choose If You Were Millionaire?

I once read in a book that you should think about what you would do with your life if you didn’t have to go to work each morning. So the best way to ask this question would be: What you would do if you were a millionaire?

The point here is not to say that you would do nothing but drink Daiquiris on the beach. Technically, most of us would still “work” if we won the lottery tomorrow morning. The difference is that you would likely ditch your day job, then you would simply do what you really wanted to do in life.

Most of the time, we restrain these thoughts since we “cannot” quit our job due to financial obligations such as mortgage payments, kids, spouse, etc. As we live on a set budget and we enjoy life the way we do mostly because we have our income, the last thing we think about is quitting our job to do something else. Especially if “doing something else” means starting on our own as a self-employed worker.

Based on the fact that the lottery ticket in my wallet is a winner, I would do…

#1 Become a Professional Blogger

With the rhythm at which things go with my online company, I just can’t imagine what I would be able to do if I was able to work on this 40 hours a week. Especially considering that I could do it from the beach, with the daiquiri ;-). I really like blogging and I also like managing my own business. Being the owner of a company would definitely be my very first project to start.

#2 Delivering conferences

I think I enjoy talking as much as I enjoy writing. It seems that there is no limit to my desire to express my opinions. I would definitely apply as a speaker for a company that creates and delivers conferences. Since I have a good knowledge in personal finance, investments and blogging, I am confident that I would be hired to share my knowledge.

I delivered a few conferences in my previous career and I loved it! While it is quite a challenge to keep your audience interested for 45-60 minutes, the reward you get when you see the lights on in the eyes of the participants is amazing.

#3 Morning man on a radio show

I have never been on a radio show in my life but I just love what those guys do in the morning. They take the news from the newspapers and start talking about it. I think it would be an amazing experience but I have no clue where to start if I wanted a job in this industry. It is probably pretty hard to get a seat as most morning men are established and well known individuals. I doubt that Mike the blogger would impress the station manager ;-).

#4 Teacher at University

During all my years as a student, I have felt that we were not exposed to enough practical cases. Most teachers explained theories that they never had the chance to apply in the “real world”. I would like to teach students how it really is in life and what is the bridge to take to come from university to the job market.

#5 Independent financial advisor

Funny enough, I can’t get enough of my own job ;-). I really like talking to clients and explaining what is going on in the markets.  I like helping them succeed in their goals while showing them financial basics. I would definitely keep a small book of people I like if I would become a millionaire. Just for the fun of talking finance with them!

Will I ever do one of these?

I am actually working very hard to grow my online business and I think that it would be relatively easy to become an independent financial advisor, these projects probably won’t happen for several years. Why? Simply because I am paralyzed by the fear of not being good enough and losing what I currently have. If I ever succeed, delivering conferences and becoming a teacher sound feasible as well. However, becoming a morning man on the radio is more like a fantasy than anything else 😉

What about you? What would you do if you were a millionaire tomorrow morning?

I would be traveling around my job…blogging about it (good excuse for it to count as a job?)

100% would start my own law practice and grow the online business

I am in for dreaming!

1. Expand my Online Store to be the premier online outdoors outfitter in Canada.

2. Buy the biggest parcel of land in the countryside that I could and enjoy it!

3. Assemble a crack team of specialists to answer the silly questions that pop into my head. I would have them study the biodiversity on the property and more!

4. Find ways to make money with what is on my vast acreage. ie farming, logging, wild crafting, nature tours…anything and everything.

5. Be more like Richard Branson

I’d continue doing my job now (social media coordinating) but I think I would also be a bartender, real estate agent, pro blogger, have my own show (on YouTube or online radio) AND teach. I want to do all of those things. Thankfully I can still do them all and not have to be a millionaire. The only difference is, being a millionaire would free up some time to do all of those things.

Most of the millionaires in Canada are still working at their day jobs, because a million dollars isn’t a sufficient level of wealth for most successful professionals and entrepeneurs to give up their day jobs. Most families with 100K in combined annual income will need to become “multi-millionaires” to retire to the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed.
