The “I Want To Quit My Job” Evaluation Grid

So you want to quit your job? You think that the grass is greener on the other side? However, you are not sure that quitting your job would be the best move for your career still. I recently though of quitting my job [1] and decided to assess my present job value compared to another job offer. As I previously mentioned in my post about 7 things to consider before quitting your job [2], I am sharing the evaluation grid that helped me making my final decision (for now 😉 ).

My system is pretty simple. According to the 7 factors I determined, I decided to give a mark from 1 to 3 for each points and sub-categories. The sub-categories will be determined by the type of employment you have. If you don’t have a variable portion in your income, you may not evaluation it when considering if it’s a good thing or not to quit your job. Here’s how the points works:

1 point: it sucks / it really sucks

2 points: it’s okay / nice to have

3 points: it’s really cool / I think I just fell in love

So even if a factor is really bad, it deserves 1 point, if it’s okay or doesn’t make any difference in your decision, it gets 2 points and if it’s something that is definitely better or that you really appreciate, it gets 3 points. In order to help you out, you can also add a justification/comment column. That will make your points clear in your mind.

So I present my grid compared to a job offer I received:





Pay Cheque



$ expectation is bigger with current employer

Bonus Expectation



Calculated differently but the result is similar

Work Conditions



I would be able to work 4 days with new employer

Location / Environment



The first one is in a poor sector, the second one is far from home.

Managers / Co-workers



I would love to work for one of my friend (new employer)

Non Salary Advantages



I barely pay interest on my debts with my current employer.

Career Opportunities



I know a lot of people already.

Company Philosophy



The new employer cares more about his employees.




So if I look at the “I want to quit my job” evaluation grid, I would be better off with the other company. However, there are also things that cannot be calculated and that you must into consideration:

– I owe a lot of money for my MBA. This ties me for 3 years with my current employer. If I quit my job earlier, I would have to write them a big fat cheque.

– I don’t know many people in the other company and my friend my not be there for a long time. Therefore, I might quit for nothing.

– I have the option to move towards downtown next year and I would be able to get a bigger pay cheque as they offer a premium.

– I am negotiating a 4 day/week schedule as well. Therefore, I would be able to get most of what I want.

So in the end, I will not quit my job… for now. As I am still angry, it will only add to my motivation of making more money online and finally quit my job for a better future later on.

Having your friend as a boss could be very dangerous if it the right expectations aren’t set… maybe that should be a 2 🙂

Don’t mean to diss, but I guess what people say about “wanting to quit after the company paid for the MBA” assumption is very true.

I would have thought you know you need to stay 3 yrs after the MBA, BEFORE you start the MBA, and this “should I quit” dilema

I agree that this is a risk. However, I’ve been working with this guy for the past 2 years in our MBA classes. I have a good idea of what he expects and what kind of manager he is.

Quitting my job was definitely not part of my plan. I knew about the 3 years “handcuff” and I agreed with it when I signed. However, I never thought they would not give me what I was expecting in term of income. I have been working for the same employer for the past 5 years and I never had this problem before….
