Last week, I met with a client who had just received a lump sum payment from a legal settlement. He was looking to invest this money with me since he didn’t want to touch it for several years. The amount of money had an emotional significance to him and this is why he wanted to benefit from this money during his retirement. While we were discussing the use of money in general, he asked me the taboo question:
“What is your relationship with Money?”
I’ll definitely answer this question later on, with pleasure. As a result of the question, today while I was on running on the treadmill, I got the idea of making the analogy between the type of relationships possible with an individual and those with money.
Your money is like your first girlfriend
Money is the most important thing in your life. It is precious and you don’t want to share with anybody. You are in love with what it can bring you and you can’t get enough of it. You are dangerously in love with your money.
Your money is like your ex-girlfriend
You once had fun with money but at a certain point, things wentt sour and you don’t want to hear about it anymore. You still have this bitter taste in your mouth when you think about it. While you know that you would be better off with another girlfriend, your heart is broken and you try to convince yourself that you are better off with nothing in your pocket, that you will be happier without money.
Your money is like a teenager
Your money is hard to manage and you don’t really understand how it works. Sometimes you invest it and it brings no returns. It goes up and down and you don’t know what to do anymore. The worst part is when you go see a specialist and he answers back that you only have to wait and it will come back to normal eventually. Your money is a big headache to manage.
Your money is like your parents
Each time you need it, it’s always there. You can use it for different purposes and it will generally help you succeed in what you want to do. You trust your investments as it will create benefit over the long run and will always be there for you. You can sleep tight as you know that your money is there to protect you.
Your money is like your friend
You can count on it but sometimes you will fight with it. It’s not always there when you need it and sometimes, you have too much money and you don’t know what to do anymore. Money is not always easy to manage but you usually get along with it pretty well. You have awesome time with it and you can share good moments with others too.
Your money is like your dog
You have learned to tame it and now it obeys and it stays where it should be. Your budget is geared up and your money does exactly what you need it to do. You can sleep well at night since you are safe in your house. Your money has almost become your most loyal friend.
What is your relationship with money?
How do you deal with money in general? Do you consider money as the worst invention ever or as the most beautiful tool of freedom ever created?

Haha what a nice comparison!
I am between the ex-BOYFRIEND and the teenager, but I think more on the teenager side.
I am trying to grow up, I swear I do
but sometimes, things get emotional and I make bad decisions. Just like when I was a teen, I react without thinking about the consequences.
I sometimes think my wallet and I are good buddies, but my cards (debit and credit) are just like the bad guys in the gang, you know the buddies that your parents were «just not so sure about» (or totally against!)…
I would say I had fun with my money as long as I HAD money to spend! Now that I don’t have much of it, I find it less fun and harder to manage
Definitely like my first girlfriend.
I want it a lot, and I’m getting screwed a lot…
LOL! I hope you enjoyed your “moments” with money
I am happy to report that I have come to tame it like a dog. I am not at the parent stage though and there was a time where it was my first girlfriend.
Very refreshing idea. Kudos on the creativity.
