Do you want to become a full-time Blogger? If you do then you NEED to read this article from top to bottom. It’s time to give everyone a reality check.I’ve never written a post upset before because I’m always in a good mood. I love to blog and to help others. Today I’m in an unusual mood. Let’s see how this goes.

Alright so if you’re a blogger you likely want to blog full-time. I know how it works. Pro Bloggers sell the dream. You can work from home and do whatever you want. You can work any hours that you want. [Correction: Working from home means you can work any 18 hours of the day that you choose.]

Did you go to FINCON11 this year? If you did, how motivated were you? How excited were you to be more EPIC? How much more PASSIONATE did you feel? Likely very. What have you done since then? It has been a month. You probably did a roundup of the event and bragged about how many people you met. Good for you. Do you think your readers care? Nope. Are you any closer to becoming a full-time blogger? I can tell you what you want to hear or I can be honest with you. The answer is NO.

Let’s get started with my story…

My first hardcore product launch.

I finally launched my first premium product over at Studenomics. I had a soft launch over at Passive Income Now with my real estate guide in the summer. I sold a few copies and it was a cool learning experience. From there I decided to consume every piece of literature on the internet on how to launch an eBook. I paid $97 for the, “How to Launch The **** Out of Your eBook” guide.

I worked on this product all summer. I spent all of my free time on research (because real guides need real research), and learning to improve my writing style.

How much did I invest in creating my own product? Let’s look at the costs.

  • $97 in eBook.
  • $400 in the design.
  • Time to write the book (many months).
  • Time to write the sales page (3,000 words took many hours).
  • Time to write 8 guest posts.
  • Ridiculous amount of time to promote the eBook via email, forums, and Twitter.

What did I earn? How much money did I generate from this super helpful guide?

I was conservative with my estimates. I couldn’t sleep the week before the launch. The night before I went to bed an hour before the launch. As I was settling in for the night I wrote on my planner a conservative figure of 20 book sales. I figured that between 8 guest posts on popular blogs, Twitter followers, and my 1,400 RSS subscribers, I would EASILY sell 20. I woke up and realized that I had like 15 emails in my inbox. I was excited because I thought this was e-junkie notifying me of all of my sales. Whooooo! Nope just the usual crap from guest posters offering me a 300 word post. Get a life!

How many sales did I get? ZERO. Well to be specific it’s in the negatives as you can tell from my start up costs.

You see the problem is that bloggers love to write a transparency report when they succeed at something. When we were in grade two this was known as BRAGGING. Nobody ever sees the other side. I’m here to give it to you.

My friend I do NOT like to lose. Nor do I like to fail. Do you know what I hate the most? I hate to let my supporters down. This project was the first time that I got my girlfriend, friends, and family involved. I had friends proof read the guide. I had my girlfriend read it over, help me out with the sales page, and give me support. To be more specific, I don’t know how she put up with me all month. I spent every single moment jotting down notes or busting out my laptop to get some work done. Let’s just say that sometimes great ideas hit me at the WORST time.

All week after the launch my friends have been excited calling me to ask me how many copies I sold. They wanted to know if it was 20 or 30? It was ZERO. Do you know how embarrassing that is? One friend asked if I was a millionaire yet because he knows how hard I worked on this project. I’m sort of avoiding him because I don’t like the disappointed look that’s followed by a “better luck next time” bullshit line. Don’t feel sorry for me. I’m 23 and on top of the world.

Before you give me your expert advice…

I bough the $97 eBook on “How to Launch The **** Out of Your eBook” and I downloaded like 20 workshops that the author made available. I went over everything with such great detail.

I consumed every piece of information on the topic from CopyBlogger, I went through all of Ramit Sethi’s psychology links he has bookmarked, and my girlfriend gave me her psychology tips from years of studies.

My product was based on extensive research. I went through every reader email and comment to see what common questions were. I didn’t just launch some random project that I thought was cool.

Long story short, I did my research.

A little about myself…

I don’t play for second place. I don’t feel sorry for myself.

I’m not some person that got in debt $30,000 because I couldn’t resist buying stupid shit on my credit card. I finished college. I got my degree. I didn’t drop out to “follow my passions” or to “channel my creative energy.” I hustled. Worked full-time hours, blogged all of the time, and studied my ass off to get strong grades. I didn’t get poor grades and then turn around to blame the system.

I bought a condo when I was in college when it was still in pre-construction. It was in an up and coming area. I saw potential and more importantly, I saw dollar signs.

Well it has gone up over $100,000! Now I bought a second condo. I rent out my first unit for $1,400 a month. I get to travel and do cool shit.

I also worked full-time hours every year of college. I was able to earn over $40,000 while I studied and went down south a few times a year to party hard while other people complained about the economy and sat around on Facebook stalking girls that they had no chance with.

I don’t like to lose and I don’t want to be apart of something that sucks.

I consumed everything..

I swear to you I have consumed every piece of material on working for yourself and following your passions.

What books did I read on the topic of entrepreneurship?

  • Never Eat Alone.
  • Art of Non-Conformity.
  • 4-Hour Workweek.
  • I Will Teach You To Be Rich.
  • Career Renegade.
  • Escape From Cubicle Nation.
  • Crush it!

I didn’t stop with books. I took all of these online courses. I paid for:

  1. Earn1k with Ramit Sethi
  2. The Hustle Project with Adam Baker and Corbett Barr.

I’ve read everything out there on working for yourself because I’m very excited with the idea of working on my own projects and helping people. I now realize that it’s more realistic to get a real fucking job.

Selling the dream..

Everybody wants to follow their passions and read the next guide on how you can follow your passions. We all want to be “our own boss” and work on our own terms.

There’s a reason that Pat Flynn makes more in one month than most of us will make in a year from blogging. He sells the dream. We sign up for his affiliate links and he continues to live the dream while we work full-time jobs and walk around like zombies because we were up all night blogging.

Why won’t anyone else give you this reality check? Because then they wouldn’t be able to sell their consulting services to you or to push affiliates on you.

Pat Flynn made $12,600 from Bluehost on readers in September. The dream is being sold and we are all buying it.

[FYI, this is not an attack. I love Smart Passive Income and continue to read it on a daily basis. Actually it's my favorite blog. Whenever Pat releases a premium product I will be the FIRST person to buy it. It can be ANYTHING. I would purchase sand on the beach from Pat because he deserves every penny. I'm just saying that we need to take action instead of chasing dreams that are unrealistic.]

 Making money online.

I tried every strategy for making money with blogging. In three years you can really test everything out. Three years is a lot of time to see what works and what doesn’t work.

Google Adsense.

It’s sort of tough to rank high for any decent keywords. Plus I want to help my real readers instead of worrying on some random keywords. I usually make the monthly payout for Adsense. My record month was close to $400, nothing compared to others.

Affiliates.

How many credit cards or bank accounts can you promote? I’ve had good results with affiliates and plan on pushing more credit card offers because it seems that my readers would rather sign up for credit cards than learn how to conquer their credit. More credit card offers it is!

Creating products.

Well you know how that went…

Funny story, one day a reader emailed me to tell me that he loves my blog. Then he asked me why I even bothered with it. We got on the phone and he told me how he makes thousands per month from promoting credit cards and creating niche sites. He said he loves the idea of writing for readers but doesn’t get it. I didn’t want to get blinded by the dollars since you know, “follow your passions and the money will follow.”

I told him that I love to help people. I guess people don’t love my help.

I appreciate the reality. I am sure that well over 90% of blogs make less than $100 per month if the number isn’t even higher. Full-time for me is not an option, but I would like a little extra to pay on my debt. Plus it beats wasting time watching TV.

I don’t feel sorry for you Martin, i’m sure your blogging has had success in other areas aside from product creation.
But I won’t buy the book. I just don’t buy eBooks …

I really like the points about SELLING the dream. Some folks are better salesmen than others are.

I love this. Too many people tend to quite when the going gets rough or when they put their heart and soul into a project and it flops. I’ve had my fair share of these experiences too.

What has it taught me? That I don’t like to lose either. I like to win. And I’m not a quitter unless the silly project is killing me, then I will let it be. You never know the stuff you’re made of until it’s tested.

Living in reality makes you smarter than anyone on the whole planet. You find what you can and can’t do. And that’s what makes a person successful.

I don’t really buy eBooks either, I prefer real books or online articles.

Best post ever. The people who make big money in any area are the people who have the ability to sell something–tangible or intangible, possible or impossible.

I’ve been in the same boat before, but selling a different product. I got all excited about it, started cold calling and working toward making sales, but the market just wasn’t there. I didn’t sell all that much, and finally I scrapped it.

Conceptually, your product is/was very much like my failed product–there’s a market need for it, it’s just that the people that have this problem or need this service don’t know they need the product/service. Selling dreams is a much better business model, because the people who have financial products are going to spend a lot more money on lottery ticket chances to prosperity than a perfect guide on how to get from A to B. You can solve their problem, but their perception is that the problem is a lack of income, not irresponsible credit card use.

I wish you the best of luck. Even if this ebook didn’t work out as planned, it’s clear that you’ve gotten something out of it. Take it as a learning experience and keep pushing where you’re making the most money–long-term wealth building with real estate etc.

I don’t feel sorry for you, but I do have a lot of respect for anyone who tells it like it is. I feel like you just did that in the best way possible!

@CFM Those are wise words. Blogging is better than watching tv. If you can pay down some debt with extra income, then you’re ahead of the game. There’s no point to be delusional.

@SPF Many people don’t buy ebooks. I tried to never use the word ebook when promoting it or on the sales page because it sounds low class. I tried to use “premium guide” or something along those lines. Thanks for stopping by.

@JT WOW. Thanks for the high praise man. I was a bit worried about this sort of transparency report because we all love to be told that we’re the best and we’re going to be rich. I’m glad you appreciate my honesty.

Second eBook failure report on TFB in a short time period. I never really planned on getting into the eBook part of blogging and now I definitely don’t plan to.

Not that you can’t make a ton of money if you write the right eBook and reach the right people. But, it takes a lot of work and luck and you definitely aren’t anywhere near close to being guaranteed success as these reports show.

@SM Lol that’s too funny (or sad?). Two failed ebook reports on the same blog in the same month or so.

I’m interested that you paid for Earn 1K but put 3 years into blogging before realizing you couldn’t make money on an info product. One of the first rules is to fail fast and often until you find out what the market wants. It’s GREAT that you got so much feedback from your friends but did you test the market? How did you gauge what they would pay for before you sunk all that time in learning how to deliver it?

Not bashing you or E1K in the least, I took the course and doubled my income in the first full year of freelancing. It wasn’t through an info product or blogging though.

Hey Kelly, my market research was going through every email question, blog questions, asking my readers, and reaching out to my mailing list for feedback. I’m actually the biggest proponent of not using your friends to gauge interest. I search through the Google keyword tool, checked click bank, Amazon, and other blogs. I wanted to deliver something that was research based and could legitimately help you save thousands of dollars.

I’m not done with ebook. I plan on releasing it for kindle and on Amazon. I was just discussing the pdf launch.

Oh and I agree with your statement on Earn1k. It did help me increase my freelance income. I was just ready to make the shift from freelancing to productizing. The course is also helpful for more than just freelancing. The psychology and the tactics have been helpful in other area of my business life. I don’t regret it one bit.

I went down the same path (www.fbplays.com) and I was struggling to make any sales (1 or 2 per month @ $30). I was bleeding cash because of adsense.

I ALMOST gave up on it. Then I realized, I was trying to invent a new mall (landing page), when I could just set up a kiosk at the best mall in the world (amazon).

I converted my E-Book to be kindle compatible (www.fiverr.com) for $25 and threw it up on Amazon’s Self-Publish KDP program. During september I was the #2 book in my category and bringing in a steady passive income every month since.

Don’t give up on your E-Book Martin! Chances are, you just need to place it where the buyers are!

Hey you whine about not making any sales but your sales page isn’t too appealing. YOu picked a pretty competitive niche and anyone that comes to your page will be asking “why should I buy this product and not other ones?” Instead of having lux and deluxe products just have one product and offer bunch of bonuses. and give FREE consultation to first 20 people that buy the book. Your copy doesn’t strike me as something that will connect with customers. Maybe you should try video – might be better medium for you.

I know you gonna say that you asked for no comments. but you whine like a little spoiled brat that didn’t get his cookies and discourage others, so i felt compelled to say this.

Hey Martin,
I can definitely feel where you’re coming from and I’ve been in this situation where I felt helpless. But as cliche as it sounds, pick a passion and stick with it. You sound like a smart guy and it seems like you’re right at the tipping point – stick with it a little longer before you decide to give up hope. I think you’ll find it rewarding.

To give you an example, 1.5 years ago, I was a fresh college grad making $32.5k. I found something I loved(online marketing consulting) and I stuck with it – but I ran into tons of roadblocks along the way. But once you lock down that focus, you’ll be able to push through them more effectively. Fast forward to now – my income is above six figures.

This example isn’t meant to brag, but it’s to show you that you can do it. You don’t have to be smarter than anyone – just find something you love and stick with it!

Maybe writing about credit isn’t exactly your interest – maybe there’s something else?

Awesome post MD, I agree with you on all the income reports and the blogs about blogging. People always want to read more about how to make easy money and the huge income reports make it sound easy. BTW, I LOVE Pat’s blog and read it everyday. But that doesn’t change the fact that I read it mainly to know how I can bring in that kind of income too.

I have one criticism though. I don’t know how you picked the blogs you guest posted but did you align them with your target audience? I did read your guest posts in a few blogs, but none of those blogs (from the comments and the usual writer style) has the audience you are looking for. Don’t take it wrong, just my 2c.

Whoa.. tough love at its best. Thank you for a different perspective. But, it is hard to not want to blog full time especially after you read passive income investing and see that success is real.

I don’t want to be a full time blogger. I would burn out quick if I go that route. Part time is great for me. It helps pay the mortgage of the 4 plex, what more can I ask for? You sound like a young motivated person so I’m sure you’ll push through and make lots of money soon. ;)

Pat Flynn is a genius as selling the dream. Whether you make money or not it doesn’t matter. So long as he’s making money off you. Brilliant!

First of all man, HUGE PROPS for having the testicular fortitude to go into full detail about the fact you struck out. You just got more respect from me for this one post, than you had from me reading your site every week (and I thought you had a pretty decent site!). The fact that you genuinely don’t want pity is admirable. I can honestly say that if I was starting a company in almost any field, I would hire you.

As are as becoming a full-time blogger, I always seen it as a supplemental income, and I’m experimenting with a few different ideas as I work full-time. I recognize it is more of a hobby at this point than anything else. I think this post should go viral among bloggers who believe that reading several PF blogs and regurgitating what they just read will make them rich.

The funniest part of the rant (and I love rants) was when you showed exactly why we are where we are as a society and pointed out that you had much more success pedalling credit cards than teaching people solid PF fundamentals.

I would pay in the $20 range for an ebook of you just making fun of the stuff you have seen since you started blogging!

My friend there is MUCH more money in promoting credit cards than showing people how to get out of debt. That’s what I learned in my experience.

You definitely get a lot of credibility for putting this out there – you put it up without apologies and without asking for sympathy. You’ve definitely earned my respect.

As far as earning from the eBook, I’m not one to give advice (I’m not in it for the money or the women, haha. Bring the influence on!). But I did read the copy you sent me and I will definitely toss up a post on it in my next roundup. Maybe Amazon is the key? I guess all you can do is experiment…

I have a feeling that the full story isn’t written yet on your eBook.

I’ve known for awhile that content is not king, which is a little sad, but what can you do. I would die of boredom from writing those types of dry articles that rank well. To me, that’s not full time blogging, it’s running a website that happens to be in a blog format.

VERY few bloggers are able to make an income from writing what they want. You need a crazy big following to do so, I believe.

The problem with blogs is that their content wears out quickly and their format forces you to write new content constantly. Your friend creating websites with ever-green content based on certain niches was telling you something.

You might research Site Build It. I’ve used it for my website. I’m now making 250$ a month on Adsense alone after working on my site in the evenings for two years.

Best. Transparency report. Ever.

Thanks to Martin for sharing it. It’s interesting, because once (several years ago) I launched an ebook that did fairly well. I had no blog or following, but the topic was very niche and something I only seemed to know how to do (not literally of course, but no one else was writing about it 8 years ago).

In any case, I got tired of selling it because I just wasn’t interested in it. I wasn’t interested in the topic, the people who wrote me for advice, the affiliates who sold it, updating it. Nothing.

On the other hand – I currently write a blog that barely anyone reads because I love it. And I decided to focus on writing for readers + myself. What I hope to gain are refined writing skills, small affiliate income (I’m realistic, $100 a month would be nice) and potential for connections to new projects and work.

While blogging directly for dollars might not work for everyone, leveraging your voice for new opportunities can work in this medium. Have you thought about freelance writing? It’s hard to break-in, but I easily see you writing for Mint, Currency, etc.

I know you don’t want motivational quotes, but I’ve seen this blog now and then and I wasn’t sure if you were serious. If you can share this, move past this failure and keep trying just as hard then you have a real chance :)

Business is tough. There are people making it with passive income from info products and blogging but who’s really ready to put in 4000 unpaid hours to get to that passive income? And how many people do you see running 10 businesses like this at the same time because it really takes less than 1h/day? When you look at the reality and the probabilities, getting paid a reasonable hourly rate for “work” isn’t a bad deal.

I struggled a lot at first, and wasted years studying what other people were doing online. Through many attempts I eventually found that what I was doing on my own all along led me to real value I could provide for people, turned that into a good income, and I’m now working on replacing myself. In a cheap overnight business it’s not hard to get VAs to do everything but in a bigger business it takes a little more work to keep creating value without doing more work. The easier it is for you to do, the easier it is for someone to copy.

Just because you love something doesn’t mean you want to be paid to do it. Another way to look at it (which applies to me sometimes) is when you’re so pissed off about something you’re going to take action and make money along the way to let you spend more time on it. The chances are vanishingly small that you will ever get paid over $200 for every single hour of your life that you put into something. But if you can get a sense of satisfaction just from spending a lot of time on it and you focus on the right angle, you can get some decent revenue.

For some people that’s promoting credit cards (I’ll start right after I’m done stuffing cash store fliers in mailboxes) and for others it’s something completely different. The great thing about business is that there are some many opportunities no one has taken advantage of and regardless of where you are there’s always something you have to offer.

I was earlier told that I cannot find an income with blogging and we cannot depend on this alone. I admit I failed twice, but learned my lessons. The third attempt is successful and I am now earning twice to thrice higher than what I am earning from my regular day job.

I agree with many of the commenters — just because your Credit Card Guide didn’t pan out doesn’t mean the dream is dead. It’s possible that the people you’re marketing to — through guest posts, reviews, etc. — are not in your target market, just as Suba points out.

For example, I wrote a review about your guide on my blog, stating that I believe that your guide is a great resource for people who aren’t personal finance nerds. However, most of my readers are PF nerds. They’re not in your target market. Why don’t you try expanding your marketing efforts and seeing where it leads you? I bet your guide could still sell 20 or more copies.

I have no intention of blogging full time. I would be happy with making $10 a month from it. Anything really. I actually really do enjoy posting, even if my opinion is appropriately less valuable to people than almost every other blog a person can read on the web. Maybe some day I might start making a little money, which was the reason I started my little blog. But I have come to find it fun and exciting to write stuff that someone else might happen upon and actually benefit from.
