This can’t be real. I mean, we are already at the end of September!?! I actually wish that 2009 was longer when I look at my investments 😉 While there are still a lot of uncertainties in the air, 2009 showed us the best of stocks (while 2008 showed us how the best stocks in the world can crumble faster than a rock in a bottomless pit!).
Back in January, we (a few stock picker/fellow bloggers) put up a challenge; Chose the best stocks in 2009. We were allowed to choose 4 stocks each, no matter the market. I started the year as a winner (finishing second in Q1) as I had selected a defensive stock (Johnson & Johnson) just in case the crisis was over. The second quarter was still good but other bloggers who bet on an oil index to be part of the best stocks in 2009 took the pole.
Overall, I am satisfied with my performance in Q3 as I am showing an average return of 24.49%. While Google (Nasdaq:GOOG) and Scotia Bank (TSE:BNS) surged, Com Dev international (TSE:CDV) went down and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) is not doing much. If I consider my overall performance with the TSX, S&P500 and the Nasdaq, I have managed to match the markets with 4 stocks :-D. I would surely beat the indices counting the dividends from BNS and J&J!
I should have suggested counting the dividend yield in the Best stocks 2009 contest 😉 BNS is definitely part of the best Canadian dividend stocks as it would be giving a 5.8% dividend yield considering my purchase price (which was very low!). I must admit it was totally my fault since I was the one who suggested this stock picking competition… shame on me!
So here are the detail of my stock picks for 2009:
Google (NASDAQ:GOOG): 61.17%
Bank of Nova Scotia (TSE:BNS): 46.71%
Com Dev International (TSE:CDV): -11.71%
Johnson & Johson (NYSE:JNJ): 1.77%
So the winner for Q3 of the best stock 2009 competition is….
INTELLIGENT SPECULATOR!!! with a MARVELOUS 73%! (no wonder this guy is working on a trading floor!).
